Hi everyone,

I know, I know it's been a while since my last post. I've been busy with my master's degree studies (cybersecurity), which is will a post of its own in future. There have been many things happening in cyberspace and IRL which I want to write about, and I'll start with Disobey.

Disobey is, I believe, a largest cybersecurity / hacker event in Finland, held once a year. On their website Disobey describes themselves as following: "...we wish to encourage hacker culture and bring together like-minded individuals at a gathering to share information and to train the skills our adversaries use against us. Our goal is to foster a vibrant community of creators, makers and breakers. We value encouragement, creativity and sharing and believe everyone can teach us something about the world."

Tickets go out fast to this event, so this year was the first time I was able to get tickets and participate this event. So, what was it like?

Disobey was held once again in Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki, Finland. Kaapelitehdas is an old cable factory turned into an event venue. This means that Disobey was divided into a few main areas which held different activities and stages for speakers.

There is a more open area for CTF-teams to set their machines and to work those challenges. I did not participate on CTF-but talked for a team who ranked up high this year and it sounded like a cool experience. Personally, I would fear missing out other events in Disobey if I would try to catch those flags so think I'll let CTF-challenges to other hackers the future too.

In the end of the venue was the community village which was amazing! In the community village was smaller booths for CitySec organisations (which I have written before), schools, Short-Wave Radio enthusiasts and many other amazing smaller communities involved in hacker culture. Over here you could take part of lockpicking, pub-quizzes and other community events.

Big emphasise in Disobey is learning and hance the speakers. There were quite a few stages and many wonderful experts speaking this year! Some stages were smaller for more intimate experience and others were bigger stages for larger audiences. Venue isn't that huge so moving across the venue from stage to another was easy and did not take too much time.

Between stages and community village was also commercial companies, organisations and sponsors. Having sponsor to back up events like this is essential but I really enjoyed that atmosphere was super chill and whole event felt really community driven and made for community members instead too commercial or industrialised.

In the end I think Disobey managed to fulfil my expectations and was really impressed how everything was organised. Mostly I was impressed about the atmosphere and warm welcoming feeling I had. So BIG THANKS to everyone involved making it happen and other cool hackers and nerds that I met. I definitely going to try get tickets for Disobey 2026 as well!

If you want to see what kind of talks you can expect, here is a link for my favourite talk this year:
Flipping Bits: Your Credentials Are Certainly Mine
By: joohoi and STÖK
Talk is about how space weather, heat voltage, solar winds etc. might make your devices do things they should not do, like send emails to wrong addresses. Talk is really fun, and I love joohoi's and STÖK's energy on stage! (If link bellow gets broken for some reason, you it and other talks in Disobeys Official YouTube channel)
